Although many of us are still newbies, there’s no harm in sounding like a pro. Like most sports, football has unique language that requires intense translation and Duolingo to understand. Today we’re going to be talking about football terms and lingo!
I’ve decided to include a couple new terms each week so it’s not too overwhelming to learn! Stay tuned each week to learn more lingo and start really understanding the game!
Let’s get into it..
Line of Scrimmage—The imaginary line separating the two teams, extending from wherever the ball is. Neither team can cross this line until the play begins and the ball has been snapped. ( the ball being snapped is the motion of the ball from the center to the quarterback signalling that thne playh has begun )
Fumble – A fumble means you lose possession of the ball. This can lead to the other team picking up the ball, which is called a turnover. ( Basically, you shit the bed.. )
Field Goal – A 3-point kick from the line of scrimmage that goes through the field goal.
Field of Play – The area on the field that is “in bounds.” The 100 yards in between the two endzones.
End Zone – The 10 yard area at the end of the field, where touchdowns are scored.
Handoff – When one player passed / hands off the ball to another player. Typically this happens between the quarterback and the running back.
It’s okay if this is you right now… We’ll figure it out as we go and thats enough football lingo for today!
Tips for how to enjoy the game this Saturday!!
Next Saturday we have another Colorado Buffs home game against Kansas State. In football there are a lot of reporters and sports bettor’s who like to make educated predictions for the games. Although, these predictions aren’t always correct and are really just educated guesses. Next week, Colorado is overall being projected to win the game. I mean I’m no professional but I agree…
I hope everyone is planing on going to the game! I also wanted to include in this weeks blog a quick segment about how to enjoy a college football game ( especially for people still trying to understand the game)!
- Go with friends!! Preferably people that are interested in watching the game and can help you learn a bit more. If not just to have fun and hang out or get an overpriced hotdog.
- Get there early! If you’re in the student section I recommend getting to the stadium at least a half hour early. The student line to get into the stadium is typically really long and you dont want to have to worry about missing out on seeing Ralphie run! You also want to secure a good seat so you can actually see the game and not just a bunch of students heads.
- Show your school spirit! Wear your favorite CU merch and get dressed up! Everyone is super hype on game days and even if you’re still trying to understand the game its fun to get into it and get hyped!!
Show your school spirit and email me pictures for next weeks blog!!! and also stay tuned for next weeks guest blog!!tay tuned next week for a guest blog about tips for young athletes!!
